ABOUT

The Birth of Idaho Huntsman

I was born and raised in Southwest Idaho and grew up scouting, hunting and exploring southern Idaho’s diverse public lands. I was raised with a deep appreciation and respect for the outdoors and the wildlife in which we are blessed in abundance and variety here in Idaho. I have spent more than 40 years in this beautiful, diverse, and rugged state.
Idaho Huntsman scouting services was born around 3 AM after a long sleepless night thinking about my 14 yr. old son Saje. We had done all the work necessary for a successful southern Idaho deer hunt in Unit 32A, near Lake Cascade. We studied the area on maps, collected every form of digital data - including harvest reports, game density stats, trail access info and more. We spent 2 days pre-season scouting the area the week prior to the hunt, located food sources, water sources, game trails and travel patterns. We had already located several animals and marked their locations using GPS and trail cam footage.
When time for the hunt arrived, we hiked in a mile and a half and upwards of 1,400 vertical feet to get situated before first light. Within a few minutes of settling in, in true teenage form, Saje was asleep. As the skyline grew lighter, I had located five deer 265 yards up the ridge. I woke Saje, and after watching and selecting the animal he wanted to harvest, he prepared for the shot and missed.
We could deliberate for days on why he missed, but that is not the point. This was in every way a successful, fun, and rewarding hunt (minus the miss) and an experience and memory we'll always remember.
What had kept me awake until 3 a.m.? The fact that I wanted Saje to harvest that animal, I wanted to make sure he had the best experience possible— one that would bring him back to southern Idaho's backcountry year after year, creating unforgettable memories with his father, his brothers, his friends, and eventually his children and grandchildren.

I reflected on what had made this hunt rewarding and memorable. How could I repeat that in the future? How could I help those, who like Saje, may lack either the time, means, confidence in ability, or knowledge of Idaho hunting areas? How could I help those unfamiliar with animal behavior, travel patterns, or pre-rut movements of Idaho deer and elk? And how could I support those who either can’t afford or choose not to pay for high-priced hunting guides or outfitters?
How could I help others have successful hunts, create those same lasting memories, and make it feel like they had a local Idaho scouting partner in their corner?

The answer came loud and clear. HELP THEM!
So here I am, ready to help. I have scouted in most Idaho areas, including my customer's most frequented units - Smoky-Bennett, South Hills, and Pioneer Zones.
Whatever your situation may be. Whether it is the lack of time to get away from the office to scout your Idaho unit, or travel the hundreds or thousands of miles to get to your area several days before your hunt. Whether you are new to the sport or just wanting some support. I am here for you.
